Johnny Walker heavyweight move

johnny walker

Johnny Walker is changing divisions again, and this time the move is a big one.

He is heading to heavyweight.

The plan right now is a fight with Ante Delija at UFC Belgrade on Aug. 1. Nothing is officially signed yet, but the matchup is already moving in that direction. For Walker, it feels like the kind of change that was probably coming sooner or later anyway. His run at light heavyweight has never really settled into anything stable for long. There were flashes, knockouts, strange fights, rough losses, and stretches where it looked like he might still put the whole thing together. Then it would slip again.

The last loss to Dominick Reyes did not help. Walker has won only two of his last six fights, and that kind of record usually forces a fighter to make a decision. Stay where you are and try to repair the same story one more time, or change the setting and see if the career feels different in a new weight class. Walker has picked the second option.

Walker gets a fresh start

Heavyweight actually makes some sense for him. He has always been long, awkward, and hard to read when he is loose. He does not fight like a neat technical light heavyweight anyway. He fights like someone who can make things strange very quickly. At heavyweight, that kind of style can become even more dangerous if the power carries the way he wants it to.

There is also the simple body question. Some fighters look like they are always negotiating with their frame at a certain weight. Walker has had a bit of that feeling around him for years. Moving up takes one set of problems away, even if it brings a different set in return.

Ante Delija is not an easy first step either. He is a former PFL heavyweight champion, a strong physical fighter, and exactly the sort of opponent who can make a new division feel very real the second the clinch starts. He already beat Marcin Tybura in his UFC debut, so this is not some soft landing for Walker. If he wants the heavyweight move to mean something, he is going to have to earn it straight away.

That part actually suits this matchup. Both men need something from it. Walker needs a new lane. Delija needs to stop the slide after back-to-back losses. There is not much mystery in that. Somebody gets a useful push. Somebody leaves in a worse place than before.

Walker has already been around heavyweights in the gym too, including work with Francis Ngannou. That does not prove anything by itself, but it does tell you this move is not some random panic decision made in one bad week. The idea has clearly been in the air around him for a while.

Now it is close enough to feel real.

  • Walker is set to leave light heavyweight behind.
  • His first heavyweight fight is being lined up for Belgrade.
  • Ante Delija gives him a serious test right away.
  • The move comes after a rough recent stretch at 205.

If this works, the whole mood around Walker changes fast. He stops being the talented but unstable light heavyweight who never fully settled. He becomes an interesting new heavyweight with a frame, style and unpredictability that could make life uncomfortable for a lot of people. If it does not work, then the same questions follow him into a new division.

That is what makes this move worth watching. It is not just a new weight class. It is another attempt to find the best version of Johnny Walker before time runs too far ahead of him.
