Gabriel Bonfim is not treating UFC Vegas 118 like a chance to share a poster with a former champion. He is treating it as the night the welterweight division has to stop calling him a rising name and start dealing with him as a real problem.
Bonfim faces Belal Muhammad in the main event on June 6 at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas. The Brazilian studied Muhammad’s recent loss to Ian Machado Garry during his preparation and believes that fight exposed useful openings: movement, takedown defence, low kicks and enough damage to stop Belal from setting his preferred pace.
It is a confident approach for a fighter entering the biggest assignment of his career. Muhammad has already held the UFC welterweight belt and spent years turning dangerous opponents into slow, difficult fights. Bonfim has not faced that level of experience in the octagon yet.

Bonfim studies Belal’s last loss
Garry did not beat Muhammad by accepting a wrestling match on Belal’s terms. He made the former champion chase and restart his attacks. Bonfim paid attention because the performance arrived just before his own opportunity to meet Muhammad.
But Bonfim is not trying to become a copy of Garry for one night. He brings heavier finishing intent and has built his current run by punishing clean openings. The plan may begin with movement and defence, but he wants the fight to end with his hands.
His results support the confidence. Bonfim comes in with a 19-1 professional record after knocking out Randy Brown in his last appearance. Before that, he edged Stephen Thompson over three rounds. Now he moves from respected names to a former champion in a five-round main event.
- Bonfim meets Muhammad in the UFC Vegas 118 main event on June 6.
- He prepared using lessons from Ian Machado Garry’s win over Muhammad.
- Bonfim enters after victories over Stephen Thompson and Randy Brown.
- Muhammad returns after losing his belt and then falling to Garry.
Muhammad is the hard part of the plan
Belal arrives under pressure, but that does not make him an easy target. He lost the championship to Jack Della Maddalena, then dropped a decision to Garry. A third straight defeat would push him far from another title opportunity, which makes this a dangerous night for a young contender expecting him to hesitate.

Muhammad’s best work is built around removing comfort. He closes space, keeps opponents on the fence and changes levels when they begin loading up on strikes. Bonfim can know what is coming and still spend an exhausting night trying to stop it.
For Muhammad, this is a test of place as much as form. Bonfim is younger and carrying momentum. Beating him would not erase two losses, but it would stop the slide and remind the division that the former champion remains a difficult step to climb.
| Main-event angle | Belal Muhammad | Gabriel Bonfim |
|---|---|---|
| Position | Former champion rebuilding after two defeats | Rising contender facing his biggest UFC test |
| Last result | Decision loss to Ian Machado Garry | Knockout win over Randy Brown |
| Central task | Bring pressure and control into the fight | Deny entries and create striking damage |
| Reward for a win | A needed recovery in the welterweight race | A breakthrough victory over a former champion |
Bonfim gets the test he asked for
Bonfim has already earned attention. A win over Thompson and a knockout of Brown are enough to make welterweights take him seriously. What he has not done is beat someone who has reached the top of the division and understands how to win when a fight becomes uncomfortable.
Studying Garry’s success only takes him to the starting line. Muhammad has had a full camp to adjust, five rounds to restore his position and an opponent openly building a plan from his most recent defeat.
Bonfim wanted a fight that could move his career quickly. Muhammad needed a fight that could stop his fall. The tape from Garry may have shaped the Brazilian’s approach, but UFC Vegas 118 will show whether Gabriel Bonfim can turn that study into the biggest victory of his career.
