Ciryl Gane teases wrestling against Alex Pereira

Ciryl Gane knows what everyone wants to see from his fight with Alex Pereira. Two elite strikers, a heavyweight title on the line, the White House setting and enough power in the cage to make every exchange feel dangerous before it even starts.

Gane is not promising to give people that simple version.

Before UFC Freedom 250, the French heavyweight made it clear that Pereira should not expect a pure kickboxing match. Gane praised Pereira as a high-level striker, but reminded everyone that this is still MMA. If the right opening appears, he is willing to use wrestling, takedowns and ground work instead of standing in front of Poatan for five rounds just to please the crowd.

Gane refuses the easy script

The obvious sell is striker against striker. Gane built his name through movement, distance control and a rare heavyweight ability to touch opponents without standing still for long. Pereira became a UFC champion in two divisions because his kickboxing timing punishes the smallest mistake, especially when opponents freeze in front of him.

That makes the temptation clear. Let them strike, let the cleaner technician win the exchanges, and let the interim heavyweight title be decided by who lands first with real force. Gane is too experienced to accept that story without adding another layer.

He said he does not want to call the fight a “100% striking matchup.” That line matters because Pereira has spent most of his UFC run making elite fighters fight where he is most comfortable. Gane is signaling that he will not enter the cage trapped by the public’s idea of what the matchup should be.

  • Gane says the Pereira fight may include wrestling and takedown attempts.
  • The bout is scheduled for the interim UFC heavyweight title on June 14.
  • Pereira is moving into heavyweight after winning titles at middleweight and light heavyweight.
  • Gane is trying to claim another UFC title opportunity after previous championship setbacks.

Pereira still brings danger everywhere

Taking Pereira down sounds like the safer idea until the details arrive. He is not known as a wrestling specialist, but he has spent years training under Glover Teixeira and carries a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. That does not make him a heavyweight grappler overnight, but it does mean Gane cannot treat the mat like a free escape from danger.

The better question is not whether Gane will suddenly become a wrestling-first fighter. It is whether he can make Pereira defend enough different looks to slow down the striker’s best reads. A level change can make Pereira hesitate. A clinch exchange can break rhythm. Even a failed takedown can change the way a puncher plants his feet.

For Gane, that may be the real value. He does not need to become Jon Jones for one night. He needs Pereira thinking about more than the left hook, the calf kick and the counter that usually decides the fight.

Fight layer What it means for Gane vs Pereira
Striking range Gane wants movement and long entries, while Pereira wants clean reads and planted exchanges.
Wrestling threat Even occasional takedown attempts can force Pereira to pause before committing to counters.
Ground danger Pereira is not a pure grappler, but his work with Glover Teixeira makes careless ground attacks risky.
Title stakes The interim heavyweight belt gives both fighters a direct route toward Tom Aspinall.

The Jon Jones question follows Gane

Any time Gane talks about wrestling, the Jon Jones fight returns to the conversation. Jones submitted him quickly in 2023, and that result has followed Gane through every major heavyweight discussion since. It became the simple criticism: elite on the feet, vulnerable when the fight hits the mat.

Gane has clearly heard it. His answer now is not to pretend that night never happened. It is to say that his own grappling has developed, and that his original movement-heavy style was built partly to avoid being taken down in the first place.

That is an important distinction. Gane does not need to chase a wrestling match with Pereira from the opening horn. He needs to decide when a takedown threat helps him and when it drags him into a fight that could become too messy. The best version of his plan is not panic wrestling. It is making Pereira defend MMA while still forcing him to solve Gane’s feet and range.

Pereira has the cleaner recent championship momentum. Gane has the natural heavyweight experience and the movement to make Poatan work harder than usual to find the target. If Gane also makes him defend clinches, level changes and ground sequences, the fight becomes less comfortable for the former two-division champion.

The public may still want a striking war. Gane is giving himself permission to win another way. On June 14, that may be the difference between giving Pereira the fight everyone expects and giving him the one he has to solve.
