Brendan Allen says Dricus du Plessis fight collapsed

Brendan Allen

Brendan Allen is walking into UFC Vegas 118 with a co-main event, but not with the opponent he says he was expecting earlier this year.

Allen faces Edmen Shahbazyan on June 6 at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas. Days before the fight, he explained why his name is not paired with former middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis instead. According to Allen, a matchup with du Plessis had been discussed for the spring before he was told the South African was injured and unavailable until later in the year.

UFC never officially announced Allen vs du Plessis, and du Plessis has not confirmed Allen’s version. The scheduled fight is Allen against Shahbazyan. For Allen, that is where the frustration begins: he believes he earned a former champion after stopping Reinier de Ridder, but he now has to defend his position against an opponent with much more to gain.

Allen expected a bigger name

Allen’s anger is easy to follow. His win over de Ridder in Vancouver gave him the result he needed at middleweight: a late stoppage over a respected contender, followed by a request for du Plessis. In Allen’s account, that request did not die immediately. He believed the fight was moving forward until an injury changed the plan.

Seeing du Plessis in training footage soon afterwards only deepened Allen’s doubts. He waited, asked for other opponents, including Kamaru Usman, and eventually accepted the available fight rather than spend more months without competing or earning.

  • UFC has officially booked Brendan Allen vs Edmen Shahbazyan for UFC Vegas 118.
  • Allen says a fight with Dricus du Plessis was discussed but fell away before an announcement.
  • No Allen vs du Plessis bout was formally confirmed by the promotion.
  • Shahbazyan enters the co-main event after three consecutive UFC victories.

Shahbazyan gets the opening

The awkward booking for Allen is a major break for Shahbazyan. After a difficult stretch stopped his early rise, he has rebuilt with three straight wins, including a stoppage of Andre Muniz in his most recent appearance.

Now he gets a fight that can erase years of stalled momentum. If Shahbazyan beats Allen, he takes down an established contender and forces his name into larger middleweight matchups.

Allen sees that danger. A victory over Shahbazyan may not deliver the former champion he wanted, while a loss would give away the position he spent his last fights rebuilding. He is carrying the risk created by the bout he says never arrived.

Shahbazyan’s opportunity He brings a three-fight winning streak into his biggest recent test.

There is no safe win for Allen

Middleweight rarely rewards waiting. Allen could have held out for a fight with clearer title value, but inactivity carries its own cost. He chose the cage, the money and the chance to force the division to look at him again.

That choice gives Shahbazyan the opening every recovering contender wants: a higher-profile opponent who feels he should be facing somebody else. Allen will expect to pressure him and show there is a level between them. Shahbazyan only needs to make that confidence expensive.

The du Plessis story will follow fight week because Allen has made his frustration public. It will not decide anything on Saturday. Dricus is not the man standing across from him, and a missed booking cannot protect Allen from the opponent who accepted the actual one.

At UFC Vegas 118, Allen can turn an unwanted assignment into another argument for a major fight, or watch Shahbazyan take the opportunity he believed should never have been available. The bout with du Plessis remains Allen’s account of a lost plan. The fight with Shahbazyan is real, close and dangerous.
