Tom Aspinall says he is getting close again.

After the eye problem that stopped his fight with Ciryl Gane and turned that title defense into a no contest, Aspinall is finally talking like a man who can see the next step clearly. He says the recovery is going well, he is back in training, and the only real thing left now is getting cleared for full sparring.

That is a good sign for heavyweight, because the division has felt a little stuck while he has been out. Big names were still moving, but the real picture at the top never felt complete without Aspinall in it. He is the champion, and until he is back in full work, the whole weight class carries that strange unfinished feeling.

Aspinall did not give some dramatic speech about the injury. He kept it simple. He said he is “almost there” and made it sound like the worst part is behind him now. That matters, because eye issues are the kind of thing that can drag uncertainty into everything. It is not only about pain. He also gave the clearest picture yet of what the UFC wants to do with him next. According to Aspinall, the plan is for him to fight the winner of Alex Pereira vs. Ciryl Gane. So while his body is still finishing the last part of recovery, the road in front of him already seems pretty clear.

That matchup makes sense from the UFC side. Pereira is one of the biggest names in the sport. Gane is already tied to Aspinall through the no contest. Either result gives the UFC something easy to sell. And from Aspinall’s side, it means he is not coming back into some foggy title picture where everybody is shouting at once. He knows what the target is.

For now, though, the bigger thing is simply that he sounds like himself again. When fighters are still deep in recovery, you can usually hear it. The language stays cautious. The timeline stays vague. With Aspinall, the tone is more forward now. Not reckless. Just much more settled.

Heavyweight has needed this kind of update. It is a division that moves fast when one big punch lands and then somehow feels frozen when the top name is not fully available. Aspinall being close again changes the mood. It does not solve everything yet, but it gives the whole division a shape again.
