Matt Brown warns Conor McGregor before UFC 329

Matt Brown

Matt Brown is not treating Conor McGregor’s UFC 329 return like another normal comeback date.

The retired UFC veteran said the first job for McGregor is simple: make the walk on July 11. After years of delays, cancelled plans and comeback talk, Brown believes another miss would hit differently.

“If he doesn’t make this walk, I think it’s going to be unanimous agreement he’s done and he’s never fighting again,” Brown said on The Fighter vs. The Writer.

That is a hard line, but it matches the mood around this return. McGregor has not fought since the 2021 Dustin Poirier trilogy, when a broken leg ended the fight and pushed his career into a long pause. He was later booked against Michael Chandler for UFC 303, but that fight fell apart after McGregor suffered a toe injury.

Now the Holloway rematch sits on the calendar for UFC 329 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Brown sees the pressure clearly. This is no longer just another date for McGregor. It is the date where the talk has to become a real fight again.

Holloway makes the risk bigger

Max Holloway is not a soft name for a return after five years away.

He has stayed active, stayed sharp and kept fighting elite opponents while McGregor has been outside the Octagon. Holloway has also carried championship rounds, wild exchanges and high-pressure nights for years. That kind of rhythm is hard to match from a long layoff.

Brown said McGregor still has enough power to be dangerous. That part has never been hard to understand. McGregor’s left hand, timing and counter shots made him one of the most feared strikers in UFC history.

The problem is the gap between memory and fight night. McGregor already beat Holloway in 2013, but that fight belongs to another era. Holloway was still young. McGregor was still rising. The rematch now has older bodies, more damage, more fame and far more pressure around it.

  • Conor McGregor faces Max Holloway at UFC 329 on July 11.
  • Matt Brown says McGregor may be done if he does not make the walk.
  • McGregor has not fought since his 2021 loss to Dustin Poirier.
  • His planned UFC 303 fight with Michael Chandler was cancelled after a toe injury.
  • McGregor defeated Holloway by decision in their first fight in 2013.
  • Brown believes a loss could badly damage interest in McGregor’s next fight.

Brown says a loss changes the appetite

Brown did not stop at the walkout.

He also said McGregor needs to win if people are going to keep treating him like a serious fighter rather than a spectacle. Brown admitted fans would still watch because McGregor is that famous, but he said the interest would drop hard if Holloway beats him.

“If he doesn’t go in there and win, I think it’s going to be a unanimous agreement that no one wants to see him fight again either,” Brown said.

That line cuts into the real tension around UFC 329. McGregor will always draw attention. He could lose and still make headlines. But Brown is talking about something different: the difference between people watching a star and people believing a fighter still belongs near major UFC stakes.

UFC 329 has no small outcome for McGregor

McGregor’s comeback has lived in rumors, training clips, interviews and delayed bookings for years. UFC 329 is different because Holloway is booked, the date is public and the card is built around the return.

Brown’s warning lands because every version of the night carries a heavy result.

If McGregor does not show, the comeback talk may collapse for good. If he shows and loses badly, the next fight becomes harder to sell as anything serious. If he shows and wins, the whole sport changes tone overnight.

That is the McGregor effect at its sharpest. One fight can still move the whole room, but the margin is thinner now. Holloway has the activity, the pace and the recent proof. McGregor has the old win, the left hand and the spotlight.

Brown is not saying McGregor has no chance. He is saying the chance has to turn into an actual walk, an actual fight and an actual result. UFC 329 is not just another comeback promise. It is the point where McGregor has to prove there is still a fighter behind the name.
