Alex Pereira stars in Onslaught before Ciryl Gane fight

Alex Pereira has spent years building an image that barely needed words: the stone face, the bow-and-arrow walkout, the left hook and the cold stare after another opponent goes down. A24 has now taken that presence out of the UFC cage and placed it inside an action-horror film.

Pereira appears in the new trailer for Onslaught, the upcoming movie directed by Adam Wingard and scheduled for release on September 4. The former UFC middleweight and light heavyweight champion plays a character called The Butcher, one of the threatening figures in a story built around escaped engineered soldiers and a fight for survival in the desert.

The timing could hardly be sharper. Pereira is not promoting a movie during a quiet break from competition. On June 14, less than two weeks after the trailer appeared, he is scheduled to face Ciryl Gane at UFC Freedom 250 with the interim heavyweight title on the line.

Pereira becomes The Butcher

Pereira is not walking into cinema with the kind of role that asks him to hide what made him famous. In the trailer, his size and expression do much of the work before he has to say anything. The film uses the same quality that has followed him through the UFC: when Pereira enters a scene, he looks like trouble before the action begins.

Onslaught also places him in a serious studio project rather than a brief cameo attached to his fight career. A24 lists Pereira alongside Adria Arjona, Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Drew Starkey, Michael Biehn, Eric Wareheim and Reginald VelJohnson. Wingard, whose recent work includes large-scale action films, directs the movie.

For Pereira, the role fits without needing a forced crossover story. He has never built his popularity around long interviews or constant talking. His appeal has always been physical and immediate. The stillness before a fight, the sudden violence once it starts and the expression that barely changes afterward are already part of the character fans know from the octagon.

Ciryl Gane comes before Hollywood

He is an active title challenger appearing in a major trailer while preparing for Gane.

There is also a clean connection between the two versions of Pereira now in front of the public. The movie does not ask audiences to forget the fighter. It leans into the reason his presence works: he looks convincing as the man nobody wants walking toward them.

None of that will help him once the cage closes at UFC Freedom 250. Gane will not be facing The Butcher from an A24 trailer. He will be facing Pereira at heavyweight, where every exchange carries different weight and where an interim title sits behind the result.

For the moment, Pereira has two dates attached to his name. June 14 decides whether his championship story grows into a third division. September 4 puts him on cinema screens as a new kind of threat.
