Sean Brady on Joaquin Buckley and Kamaru Usman

Sean Brady does not sound impressed by Joaquin Buckley bringing Kamaru Usman into camp before UFC 328.

From the outside, it is easy to see why Buckley would do it. Usman is one of the biggest welterweights of the last decade. Strong wrestling, strong pressure, years at the top. If you are getting ready for Brady, that seems like a smart name to have in the room.

Brady does not see it that way.

He said it plainly: “I’m a whole different fighter than Kamaru.” That is really the center of his point. He is not denying what Usman is. He is saying Buckley will not solve this fight just by bringing in another strong wrestler and hoping the picture looks close enough.

Brady also got more specific than that. He pointed to the one thing he thinks separates him most clearly from Usman. “Kamaru has one submission in the UFC. I have six,” he said. In other words, Buckley can try to prepare for pressure and wrestling, but that still leaves another layer of danger in front of him once the fight gets to the mat.

That is the part Brady keeps coming back to. He does not want this matchup framed like it is only about one kind of grappling. He is not trying to sell himself as a copy of Usman with a different name. He is saying Buckley is going to deal with a much different kind of threat once the fight starts. More submission pressure. More transitions. More ways to get trapped if the fight hits the floor in the wrong spot.

He also threw in another detail that says a lot about how he is reading Buckley’s camp. Brady hinted that he is not overly impressed by all the travel around Buckley during this stretch either. He clearly likes the idea that while the other side is moving around and trying to collect the right looks, he is just getting ready for the fight itself.

The timing makes this one feel sharper. Brady and Buckley are set to meet at UFC 328 on May 9 in Newark. The fight was originally supposed to headline a Fight Night, then moved onto the bigger card. So now the matchup already has more attention on it than before, and every little comment around the preparation starts landing a bit harder.

Brady sounds comfortable with that. He is not trying to oversell the fight. He is just making one point very clearly: bringing in Kamaru Usman does not mean Buckley is suddenly ready for Sean Brady.

This is also a good reminder of where Brady sees himself right now. He is not talking like a man trying to survive a dangerous striker and sneak through a hard matchup. He is talking like someone who thinks Buckley is the one stepping into the deeper water.
