Conor McGregor opens as underdog against Max Holloway

Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor is back on the UFC schedule, but the betting market is not treating his return like the old days. After the UFC confirmed McGregor vs Max Holloway 2 for UFC 329 on July 11 in Las Vegas, early odds opened with McGregor as a clear underdog and Holloway as a heavy favorite.

That is unusual territory for McGregor in the UFC. He has been doubted before, but not often like this.

The line is not hard to understand. McGregor has not fought since the 2021 Dustin Poirier trilogy, where he suffered the leg injury that kept him out for years. Holloway, meanwhile, has stayed active, kept fighting elite names and still looks like one of the hardest men in MMA to wear down across five rounds.

That does not mean Holloway has already won. Odds are not scorecards. They are a market reaction to time away, recent activity, age, injury history and matchup risk. Right now, all of those things are pushing the public view toward Holloway.

UFC 329 odds

McGregor and Holloway first fought in 2013, with McGregor winning by decision. That result still sits in the story, but it does not control the rematch. Too much has changed. McGregor became the biggest star the sport has ever had. Holloway became one of the toughest, busiest and most respected fighters of his era.

  • Conor McGregor vs Max Holloway 2 headlines UFC 329 on July 11.
  • Early odds list McGregor as a major underdog for his UFC return.
  • Holloway has opened as a strong favorite across several sportsbooks.
  • The fight is scheduled for International Fight Week in Las Vegas.
  • McGregor has not competed in the UFC since July 2021.

For McGregor, the underdog line may even help the promotion. He has always fought best with a little insult in the air. Being written off gives him something to push against, and a comeback win as a heavy underdog would instantly become one of the biggest stories of his career.

Holloway earns favorite status

Holloway being favored is not just about McGregor being away. It is also about who Holloway is. He does not usually give opponents short, easy fights. He builds pace, keeps touching targets, talks in the pocket, and forces fighters to stay sharp longer than they want to.

That is a hard style for any returning fighter. It is even harder for someone coming off almost five years without UFC rounds. McGregor’s power and timing can still be dangerous early, but Holloway is the kind of opponent who can turn a comeback into a test of lungs, legs and patience.

If McGregor lands clean early, the odds will not matter much. He built his career on making big moments happen before the fight settles. But if Holloway gets through the first few exchanges and starts stacking volume, the fight may begin to look like the market expected.

McGregor has a different kind of pressure

This is not only a fight against Holloway. It is a fight against time away from the sport. McGregor has to prove that the left hand still has speed, that the footwork still works, and that his body can handle a real UFC pace after so much time out.

There is also pride in the line. McGregor is not used to being treated like the man who needs to prove he belongs. His name still moves the sport, but betting odds are not built on fame alone. They are built on risk, and McGregor brings plenty of it into UFC 329.

Holloway has his own pressure. Being a heavy favorite against McGregor sounds good until fight week starts. Every camera will be on the comeback. Every question will circle the old fight. Holloway has to stay focused on beating the version of McGregor who shows up, not the version people think is already gone.

That is why the odds make the rematch more interesting, not less. McGregor returns as the star, but not as the market favorite. Holloway enters as the safer pick, but he still has to stand across from one of the most dangerous first-round fighters the UFC has ever seen. July 11 now has a main event with history, risk and a betting line that tells its own story before either man throws a punch.
